  • March 17: Help improve Detroit Mercy, win up to $250 through Student & Employee Satisfaction Survey

    Monday March 17, 2025

    As part of Detroit Mercy鈥檚 commitment to improving campus life, the University is conducting Student and Employee Satisfaction Surveys, which will run from Tuesday, March 18 through Wednesday, April 30.

    The confidential surveys will provide critical insight that will help the institution and is a chance for both students and employees to have their voices heard. Check your udmercy.edu email for your personalized link to compete the survey.

    In appreciation for completing the survey, both students and employees can win gift cards up to $250 by completing the survey! The earlier you complete your survey, the better your odds at winning higher amounts. Other gift cards prizes are $100 and $50, drawn bi-weekly. The incentives apply to all students and employees of all campuses at the University. A total of three $250 gift cards will be raffled for both students and employees.

    The survey is run through , which works with more than 1,900 campuses and nonprofits nationally.

  • March 17: Free estate planning and legacy workshop set for March 27

The Detroit Mercy community is invited to attend a free life planning and legacy workshop on Thursday, March 27 from 5-6:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church located at 16100 Lawton St., Detroit.

    Attendees will work with an experienced attorney to ensure their estate is passed down to the next generation.

    Workshop will cover:

    • Last Will and Testament: Allows you to leave your real and personal property to a person(s) according to your wishes.
    • Power of Attorney for health care: Allows an individual (the patient) to appoint a trusted person (agent) of their choice to act on their behalf regarding health care treatment.
    • Power of Attorney for finances: Allows an individual (the principal) to appoint a trusted person (agent) of their choice to act on their behalf regarding their assets.
    • Ladybird Deed: A deed that allows an individual to transfer property upon their death to another person(s), avoiding probate.
    • Trust Agreement: The owner of property gives it to another person or entity, who must manage and use the property solely for the benefit of another designated person.

    This event is cohosted by the City of Detroit Housing and Revitalization Department, the Detroit Housing Network and the Elder Law & Advocacy Center.

  • March 17: SACD Dichotomy lecture series features Oriana Venti on March 24

    An image of an architectural structure built on the beach of a body of water with children jumping from stones to the structure.Detroit Mercy’s School of Architecture & Community Development 2025 Dichotomy Lecture Series will feature architect Oriana Venti, who will present “Parque Coral de Volcadero: A Case Study on the Transformative Power of Architecture” on March 24 at 4:30 p.m. in the Exhibition Room of the Warren Loranger Architecture Building.

    All are welcome to attend this free and very informative event.

    The presentation will explore the origins, development and aftermath of the Volcadero Project. It will detail the methodology of EDIT studio, an innovative method that proposes the intersection of participatory design, moving knowledge and design build (Zingoni, 2014). This methodology involves:

    • future users and local experts (Engage)
    • designs based on the voices of the stakeholders (Design)
    • generates the possibility of change (Ignite)
    • transforms everyone involved in the project (Transform).

    Emphasis will be placed on participatory processes, social impact and lessons learned regarding participatory design, cultural exchange and environmental sustainability.

    Venti has an undergraduate degree in Architecture from Universidad de Oriente in Venezuela. Venti’s career as an architect has impacted various communities by leading and managing social projects using the participatory design methodology, which is a tool that enhances social agency in the intervention of public spaces. In 2020, she led the Volcadero Project, an example of binational collaboration between students and professors from the University of Tennessee, the University of Arizona and Universidad de Oriente, that resulted in three renowned awards in the United States, and most importantly, a great milestone for the community of Volcadero.

    Dichotomy is a听a student-led journal at 六九色堂鈥檚 听that focuses on social justice and critical thought concerning intellectual, spiritual, ethical and social development both in and outside of Detroit.

  • March 17: Half-day student retreat set for March 21

    Monday March 17, 2025

    All students are invited to attend a half-day mission retreat on Friday, March 21 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., focusing on the theme “Paths and Purpose: Discernment in Challenging Times.” This retreat will take place in the Mercy Gathering Place听in Shiple Hall on the McNichols Campus and is designed to help students navigate important life and career decisions through the lens of Ignatian spirituality and discernment.

    The retreat will include talks and reflections with a keynote by Fr. Tim Hipskind on discernment, complemented by insights from Mark Berlin ’93, an alumnus who has extended business experience. The goal is to equip students with practical tools for decision-making that align with their values, purpose and faith.

    This FREE event for students has been organized by the Charles T. Fisher III Chair in Business Ethics & College of Business Administration. Lunch will be provided.

  • March 14: The Writing Center offers one-stop writing and librarian research assistance

    The Writing Center logoThe Writing Center is excited to offer students the opportunity to enhance their research strategies through guided exploration of sources and personalized research assistance under the guidance of Associate Library Professor Rebecca Tull.听

    Tull will be available to help students search for and identify scholarly sources for academic assignments on Wednesday, March 19 from 1:30-3 p.m., Wednesday, April 9 from 2-3 p.m. and Thursday, April 10 from 2:15-4 p.m. at The Writing Center, located inside the Briggs Building, Room 131.

    Students, don’t miss this opportunity for one-stop assistance. The Writing Center staff will be on hand to assist you with your writing, and Tull will enhance your research strategies and ensure you are effectively utilizing our library’s resources to locate credible sources.

  • March 13: University Honors Symposium set for April 1

    Gardella Honors House in fall 2024.Each April, the University Honors Symposium is an opportunity for the Honors community to share in food, intellectual conversation and camaraderie. This year鈥檚 symposium will be held Tuesday, April 1 from 4-5:15 p.m. in the Loranger Architecture Exhibition Space on the McNichols Campus.

    All students, faculty and staff are welcome.

    The keynote speaker for this year鈥檚 symposium is Professor of Philosophy David Koukal. Koukal will deliver a keynote titled 鈥淧lato鈥檚 Allegory: An Elaboration for Our Times.鈥 His talk will be followed by a Q&A.
